Painting Plein Air During a Pandemic!

Mid August.  A glorious time of year when I have, in the past, been painting en plein air all over the island from mid June through late August.  It’s all a little different this season.  Of course that is not news to you or me or anyone out there.  My plein air group of artists, called AIRE MV, began painting in mid June.  Our show will be held once again at Old Sculpin Gallery opening August 29.  In April our group of eight artists met via zoom to discuss how to approach painting during a pandemic.  We created a plan, a plan necessarily different than anything we had attempted before.

Our show needed a title.  We decided on ‘The View from Here’.

We nixed our usual three promotional events and the opening reception.  We cannot meet, as we like to, all at the same location painting at the same time.  It’s always interesting to see how differently artists capture the same view.  With all these events not happening we had to find a path forward.  And we did.

Six concepts were created, each a broad reaching idea within which each artist was free to interpret however they liked.  Here are the six concepts:

Looking In

The approach has been an exciting challenge.  Next week I’ll show are few pieces completed thus far by AIRE MV artists.  I’ll be sending more details about our upcoming show.  Be well.  Be safe.

My Virtual Solo Art Show

Ready. I’m ready for my solo art show opening Saturday August 1st. True…there will be no opening reception or promotional event, but there is good news. Old Sculpin Gallery (OSG) opened, according to state guidelines, on June 15. It’s open and my paintings will be exhibited for folks to see. That gives me hope.

I’ll hang the show, while wearing a mask and gloves, early Saturday morning. Six visitors, masked, gloved, sanitized and signed in, will be allowed to walk in the gallery at any one time. In other news, Island Barns, the show’s title, will go virtual on the gallery’s website oldsculpingallery.org. The entire show can be seen as well as individual works. OSG has worked diligently in revamping the site so that now patrons can buy artwork on the site.

We will all move forward. We cannot go back. Those were better times at least for some of us. Not all of us. Now painting is a new kind of challenge and an artistic opportunity. With the barn series complete, I have begun painting for an upcoming group plein art show at OSG. Painting plein air during a pandemic is a whole new ballgame. More to come.
